Nationality: Mexican
Movement:
Media: Photography

Biography: Manuel Alvarez Bravo bought his first camera at the age of twenty and continued to teach himself how to use it successfully. In 1925, he won his first award at a local photographic competition in Oaxaca. He then returned to his birthplace of Mexico City where he met Tina Modotti in 1927. She introduced him to an array of other artists, notably Edward Weston, who encouraged Alvarez to continue in photography. Three years later, Alvarez began teaching at the San Carlos Academy. He also documented the work of Mexican mural painters and distributed the images to publications such as the journal, Mexican Folkways. Alvarez preferred to take pictures of nudes, and folk art such as burial decorations and rituals.
