Biography: American painter, George Luks traveled for a decade in Europe before returning to the United States in 1894. He worked as an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press and was introduced to Robert Henri by some of his colleagues. Luks moved to New York in 1896 to devote himself to painting. He joined The Eight and the Ashcan School. He had an unusual personality and claimed to live a bohemian lifestyle. Luks worked as a teacher at the Art Students League for several years before opening his own school.
