Biography:
Born in Austria, Hans Makart first studied under Piloty in Munich before moving to Vienna in 1869. His career flourished and he soon became a distinguished member of high society. He tended to produce large-scale paintings of mythological, historical, or allegorical subject matter. He had a large studio where he completed these paintings and was a major tourist spot in Vienna at the time. Makart was influential on German and Austrian painting, but his reputation diminished after his death in 1884.
